When it comes to Pigments, people either love them for their wide-range of uses or dismiss them for the extra care they require when working with them; personally, I love them!

This weekend, I used THREE's Shimmering Color Veil Bijou Box in 01(5,940 yen) from last year's holiday collection, for a friends weekending on Saturday and a Sunday outing.

After removing the paper cardboard sleeve, you have this cute, sleek, black satin makeup coffin (that's how I interpret it). Actually, the box is of pretty good quality with magnet closer.

Inside the little black coffin are three (0.9g) Shimmering Color Veils in shades: 29 Ice Blink, X02 Pink Topaz Gisele (exclude to the set), and 38 333 Dreamers.

From left to right: 29 Ice Blink, X02 Pink Topaz Gisele, 38 333 Dreamers.

29 Ice Blink: a matte snowy-white with micro glitters.

X02 Pink Topaz Gisele: a refined glitter with reddish-burgundy pink based and violet, pink, silver and gold micro glitter.

38 333 Dreamers: a grey based, bluish-lavender with silver, pink, blue, and purple micro glitter and a shimmery finish.

The photo below are swatches of the lip and cheek products I used in both looks.

From left to right: Color Veil for cheeks 23 emotional Rescue, Velvet Lust Lipstick 12 Scarlet Noir.

  2. OH MY GOODNESS! Pink Topaz Gisele is particularly fetching on you and the magical sparkles in the first look took my breath away. You are so skilled, too. :)

  3. Dreamers is such a beautiful colour! Wow. What sort of brushes do you usually use with the loose pigments?

I buy a lot of indie loose eyeshadows & do enjoy working with them. Have you tried any indie companies before, Liz? I have kind of a hoarding problem with them because they're so well-priced...

    1. My favorite brush to use with pigments is the Aoyama exclusive brush from Hakuhodo brush. Here is the link: http://www.solonelyingorgeous.com/2011/11/hakuhodo-aoyama-brush-set.html. go to the eighth photo, it's the third brush from the left.

A similar brush is the Kokutan Eye Shadow Brush MLL

I've tired a few like Fyrinnae, and two other brands that I can't remember off the top of my head. Any recommendations Toby?

    2. Ooooh I remember reading that blog post & drooling. Weirdly, I think I want the mirror as much as any of the brushes from the set. It looks really handy. :3

Ah, I love Fyrinnae. They're definitely my favourites (& they came out with a series of super glittery colour shifting eyeshadows recently called Arcane Magic: Exquisites which you might want to check out... you definitely need a glitter glue with those though). I also really like Femme Fatale Cosmetics; they make glorious duochromes. A lot of other companies have good, solid formulas with straightforward colours (I like Shiro Cosmetics a lot for that).

    3. I think the mirror is available for purchase now.

I want all of Fyrinnae's pigments! I've heard of Femme Fatale Cosmetics, but I've been avoiding the brand because I really don't need to get into another brand...fears for my bank account. But, I will be paying them a visit soon ;D

    4. Haha, let me know if you need any recommendations! :D Luckily indie pigments are much cheaper than mainstream brands.

    6. I loooove their duochrome shades in general, but in the specific:

Blinding Passion: pinky red with gold duochrome.

Candied Apple: medium red, sometimes leaning mauve & sometimes leaning pink, with green duochrome.

Marrowpetal: bright, yellow-leaning green with gold duochrome.

Reindeer Dust: pale peach with green duochrome.

The Ghost Next Door: grungey deep green with purple duochrome. The duochrome tends to overwhelm the base shade a bit, so I have to work to bring the grunginess out.

My favourites are Candied Apple and The Ghost Next Door.

if you like complex black-based colour-shifting shades, you might also like Smokebomb, Unholy, and Demon Soul. Smokebomb is quite similar to Fyrinnae's Arcane Magic: Steampunk, while Unholy or Demon Soul (I don't quite remember which one) is similar to Fyrinnae's Arcane Magic: Sorceress, but less glittery. I find the formula of the Femme Fatale eyeshadows shows off the colour shift better than Fyrinnae's older formula, but I haven't tried a lot of the Arcane Magics in the new formula.

The Gemtone Collection (Star Ruby, Fire Opal, Sun Crystal, Golden Peridot, Emerald Glow, Icemist Diamond, Moonstone, and Twilight Amethyst) are also a lot of fun - they're soft iridescent shades with a sheer white base that look great in the inner corner of the eye, over other shades, or over a dark base. They're very similar to Fyrinnae's "Ghost" series of eyeshadows.

Femme Fatale also carries a bunch of other indie brands, including (for eyeshadow) Concrete Minerals, Shiro Cosmetics, Hello Waffle, and Glamour Doll Eyes. I found Concrete Minerals fine but not particularly interesting, Hello Waffle disappointing in pigmentation, and haven't tried Glamour Doll Eyes. Of the shades they carry from Shiro Cosmetics, I LOVE Chimera (darkened grey-taupe with copper duochrome), and like I Am Groot (light-medium brown with green duochrome), Master of Whispers (a lovely soft pinky-lilacy shade), and Salt and Stone (blackened green and red).

And this blogger has some awesome swatches you might want to look into:

Phew! Hope that helps (sorry. Liz's wallet).
